Rhino Research
Why Is it Important?
Conservation relies on a firm partnership between detailed species specific knowledge; an understanding of how the different elements of complex ecosystems fit together; and practical implementation of management structures to foster an environment where ecosystems can continue to flourish into the future.
Rhino Revolution has always prioritised a pro-active rather than simply a reflexive approach. Horn Trimming has been demonstrated to be one of the most immediately impactful and cost-effective methods of protecting rhinos from poaching (Kuiper et al, 2025). Over the years many parties have raised concerns over the potential social, behavioural and survival implications of horn trimming on white and black rhinos but very few detailed, long-term studies have been carried out to assess the validity of these concerns. As custodians of wild breeding populations of both species Rhino Revolution is in a unique position to observe, document and analyse the true long-term implications of one of our most important anti-poaching tools.
Each of our long-term research projects focusses on collecting data that will be critical to effective future management of Black and White Rhino populations: whether that is understanding nuances in behaviour and social dynamics; or collecting data to demonstrate and better understand the vital ecological roles that rhinos play within an ecosystem.
We are working towards a goal where people can benefit rhinos, rhinos can benefit people and rhinos can be the champions of habitat restoration, protecting whole ecosystems through their charismatic presence. Each of our research projects is focussed around these goals. Please select the links below to find out more about our various research projects.
